Key Considerations Before
Changing Your Major

  • Meet With Your Advisor: Ensure the change aligns with your graduation plan.
  • GPA: Confirm you meet the required GPA for your new major.
  • Prerequisites: Make sure you’ve completed the necessary courses for the new major.
  • Graduation Impact: Assess how the change may affect your graduation timeline and cost.

A. Changing Majors Within CSSAH
(e.g., Social Work to Sociology)

  1. Obtain the Change of Major form from the CSSAH website.
  2. Complete and email the signed form to your assigned academic advisor.
  3. Advisor signs the form and emails it to your current department chair within one (1) business day.
  4. Chairperson signs and forwards the form to the chairperson of your new major within one (1) business day.
  5. If majors are in the same department, the current chair will send it to the designated CSSAH email. If the major is not in the same department, the new chair will sign and send it.
  6. Change effective dates:
    • If the request is made between commencement and before classes begin the next semester, the change is immediate.
    • If the request is after classes start, the change is effective the next semester.
  7. Confirmation: Within three (3) business days, you’ll be notified of when the change will take effect.
  8. Check the status: After the effective date, verify your change through your transcript or student services center page.
  9. Questions: Contact cssahchangeofmajor@famu.edu. Expect a response within two (2) business days.

B. Changing Majors from CSSAH to Another College/School (e.g., Psychology to Journalism)

  1. Obtain the Change of Major form from the CSSAH website.
  2. Email the signed form to your CSSAH advisor.
  3. Advisor signs the form and forwards it to the CSSAH Chairperson within one (1) business day.
  4. Chairperson signs and emails the form to cssahchangeofmajor@famu.edu within one (1) business day.
  5. Within three (3) business days, the form is sent to the new college for processing.
  6. The new college completes the process in iRattler.
  7. Confirmation: Verify the change on your transcript or student services page.

C. Changing Majors from Another College/School to CSSAH (e.g., from Business to Criminal Justice)

  1. After securing approvals in your current college, email the signed form to your newly assigned CSSAH advisor which can be found on the CSSAH Website at https://cssah.famu.edu/.
  2. Advisor signs and sends the form to the CSSAH Chairperson within one (1) business day.
  3. If approved, the chairperson signs and sends it to cssahchangeofmajor@famu.edu.
  4. Change effective dates:
    • If the request is between commencement and before the next semester starts, the change is immediate.
    • If after the semester starts, the change is effective the next semester.
  5. Within three (3) business days, you’ll be notified of the effective date.
  6. Confirmation: Verify the change on your transcript or student services page.
  7. Questions: Contact cssahchangeofmajor@famu.edu for responses within two (2) business days

 

Change of Major Form
