Greetings and welcome to CSSAH. I am Dr. Valencia E. Matthews and I have the privilege of serving as the dean of the College of Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities.

My goal as dean is to ensure that students in the college have a positive academic experience with relevant curriculum and experiences that meet the needs of the 21st century workforce. We invite you to join us here on The Hill to expand your horizons and to become a global citizen. We would love to be a part of your success story as you join us as a student in CSSAH.

A DIVERSE EXPERIENCE

CSSAH is the largest college in the university and is home to a prolific faculty and a diverse student body. Our integrated and rigorous curriculum opens the world to students by providing them an expansive understanding of the impact of the arts, anthropology, American History, the African American experience, criminal justice, geography, humanities, law, modern language, music, philosophy, psychology, religion, sociology, social work, and theatre.

We are also home to the internationally acclaimed Marching 100 band, celebrated as one of the many proud traditions of FAMU. Recognized for its dynamic sound and precision in technique and performance, the Marching 100 attracts the most talented student musicans from across the world. The band has performed internationally and has dazzled during presidential inaugurations, the Rose Bowl, Grammy Awards and several Super Bowl performances with entertainment icons such as the legendary Prince.

 

GETTING YOU READY

The academic experience in CSSAH is state-of-art and inventive. The College makes maximum use of technology and a variety of teaching methods. Students have presented their research at national academic conferences in history, English/American Literature and psychology. Students have interned at a variety of educational, social service, and political organizations and agencies. Students have performed on stage and honed their talents to the acclaim of critics and local audiences. Promising musicians and artists have showcased their skills through varied media, compositions and recitals. Their artistic and professional portfolios are based on years of hard work and critical assessment and evaluation.

CSSAH coursework comes alive as the educational experience for students within the College emphasizes theory, application, professionalism, and education for the greater good. Upon graduation, students are prepared to pursue professional careers and/or continue their education at the graduate level in professional studies. 

 

BECOME A GLOBAL CITIZEN

In 2018, FAMU became the first HBCU to participate in the International Collegiate Theatre Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland. The FAMU Essential Theatre production of "From the Mississippi Delta" by Endesha Ida Mae Holland, Ph.D. was met with critical international acclaim. image

CSSAH students have studied abroad in countries throughout Africa, the Caribbean, Asia, Europe and various destinations in Latin America. They have performed in front of global audiences in Paris, France; Madrid, Spain; and Edinburgh, Scotland during the International Collegiate Theatre Festival, the largest performing arts festival in the world. Study Abroad programs have taken CSSAH students to international opportunities in places such as Salamanca, Spain; Havana, Cuba and Florence, Italy.

Our newest undergraduate and graduate degree programs in Global Security & International Affairs prepares students for careers in diplomacy, international affairs, foreign service, intelligence, and other related fields. Global Security and International Affairs students focus on the most pressing and exciting global challenges of the 21st Century.
