Theatre Scholarships

There are four scholarships available to theatre students

 


Purpose


• A special fund scholarship to assist talented students who declare theatre as their major
• To reward talented students for their achievements and participation in theatre
• To assist deserving students in meeting their unmet financial needs


Eligibility


• Student who is an incoming freshman (FTIC), transfer student, or a currently enrolled FAMU student.
• Have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 or above.

• Be an active member of the Essential Theatre demonstrating commitment beyond classroom assignments.
• Recipients are expected to accept performance roles as assigned, backstage and front of house assignments, and to volunteer for other Essential Theatre activities as needed.
• Demonstrate artistry in the area of theatre arts.
• Demonstrate an unmet financial need.
• Register as a full-time student (12 hours minimum)



How To Apply


 
1. Applicants must complete the Essential Theatre Scholarship Application

2. Applicants must forward a current transcript of grades with the application.

3. Applicants must arrange an audition and /or interview:
a. Performance applicants must audition before the scholarship committee.
The audition must include two (2) monologues of contrasting styles, and a verse and a chorus of a song that is sung to piano accompaniment, or pre-recorded audio “instrumental only” accompaniment. Total audition not to exceed 4 minutes.

b. Technical Theatre applicants must arrange a conference with the Scholarship Committee. Applicants must present a portfolio and a resume of backstage work.
 
 
A limit of one scholarship per academic year may be awarded to students in the program.
 
The Scholarship Committee shall review applicants at the end of each semester. Evaluations and recommendations for retention shall be based on the following criteria:

a. Acceptance and successful fulfillment of performance/crew assignments, and evidence of volunteer work on other Essential Theatre activities.
b. Work ethic and overall attitude
c. Overall quality and demonstrated growth in work
d. Maintain the minimum “C” (2.5) cumulative grade point average and a “B” (3.0) grade point average in major courses.
e. Potential in the discipline
f. A continued demonstrated unmet financial need

 

Retention/Maintenance


• Scholars must maintain the “B” (3.0) average in their major courses.
• Scholars must maintain the minimum “C” (2.50) average in their semester courses
• Scholars must maintain the minimum “C” (2.50) cumulative grade point average.
• Scholars whose cumulative average drops below “C” (2.50) or whose major course average drops below “B” (3.0) will be placed on “probationary status” not to exceed one (1) academic semester.
• Scholars whose cumulative average drops below “C” (2.50) or whose major course average drops below “B” (3.0) at the conclusion of the probationary period will have scholarships revoked.

The Scholarship Committee shall review scholars at the end of each semester. Evaluations and recommendations for retention shall be based on demonstrated Professional Development to include, but not limited to the following:

- Portfolio Review (Required audition/interview materials i.e.; monologues (3 new selections), resume, headshots, design sketches and/or final product.
- Acceptance and successful fulfillment of performance/crew assignments, and evidence of volunteer work on other Essential Theatre activities.
- Potential in the discipline
- Overall quality and demonstrated growth in work
- Cooperation and overall attitude
- Grade point average

 

Reinstatement



Students may petition for reinstatement to scholarship status when they have successfully satisfied all the above. Only one reinstatement will be granted.

The petition, in written form, must be sent to the Scholarship Committee no later than one week after receipt of grade report.

Eligibility

• Student must have a cumulative Grade Point Average of 2.5 or above.

Student must enroll as a full-time student (12 credit hours minimum).
• Student must demonstrate artistry and/or potential in the discipline of Theatre
• Recipients are expected to accept performance roles as assigned, backstage and front of house assignments, and volunteer for other Essential Theatre activities as needed.


 


How To Apply

2. Applicants must forward a current transcript of grades with the application.

3. Applicants must arrange an audition and /or interview:
a. Performance applicants must audition before the scholarship committee.
The audition must include two (2) monologues of contrasting styles, and a verse and a chorus of a song that is sung to piano accompaniment, or pre-recorded audio “instrumental only” accompaniment. Total audition not to exceed 4 minutes.
(Out of town applicants who can’t make it to campus may arrange with the Scholarship Committee to send a pre-recorded video tape or DVD in lieu of the live audition.)

(Out of town applicants may arrange to forward slides, photos, or electronic portfolio in lieu of the live conference/interview.)

Eligibility


• Student must be of Black African descent currently enrolled at Florida A&M University as a full-time (12 credit hours minimum) undergraduate student who is a declared Theatre major;
Student must be sophomore (30 Cr. Hrs. Min.), junior (60 Cr. Hrs. Min.), or senior (90 Cr. Hrs. Min.) at the start of the award period;
• Student must have a minimum cumulative post-secondary grade point average of 2.50 or higher;

Student must display artistry in the area of theatre arts as an active member of the Essential Theatre with demonstrated commitment beyond classroom assignments.

3. Applicants must write a statement of unmet financial need and an essay detailing their commitment to the promotion of positive Black African images in the media/entertainment industry; and

3. Applicants must arrange an audition and /or interview:
a. Performance applicants must audition before the scholarship committee.
The audition must include two (2) monologues of contrasting styles, and a verse and a chorus of a song that is sung to piano accompaniment, or pre-recorded audio “instrumental only” accompaniment. Total audition not to exceed 4 minutes.

Upon Acceptance of Scholarship


Awardees are expected to:

• Provide a photograph and a written statement to the Committee, which may be used for promotional purposes; and

• Accept performance roles as assigned, backstage and front of house

• Scholars must maintain the minimum “C” (2.50) average in their semester courses
• Scholars must maintain the minimum “C” (2.50) cumulative grade point average.
