Inspired by her African grandfather, 17-year-old Mariah confronts the pressures of family, societal expectations, and the harsh realities of racial and gender stereotyping while dreaming of pursuing a college education in 1898. This inspiring story of resilience and hope follows one young woman’s uphill battle to break free from the constraints of a world determined to hold her back.
